User Services
The library has three self-service photocopiers available, all of which
do reductions, enlargements and double-sided copies. There are also two
microform reader/printers which make copies from microfilm and microfiche.
In addition the library has a scanner available to students and faculty
for academic support purposes. Access to the Library’s online catalog
as well as links to other library services are available at:
http://www.lib.snow.edu
Who May Use the Library
All Snow College students, faculty, staff, and administrators have full
borrowing privileges. Adult community members of the six county area (Juab,
Millard, Sevier, Wayne, Piute, and Sanpete) served by Snow College also
have full borrowing privileges. Children and young adults under age 18
and younger may also obtain borrowing privileges with the written consent
of a parent or guardian. Students, faculty, and staff of other Utah colleges
and universities, who have current photo I.Ds or photo I.D. with proof
of registration, have the same privileges as anyone from Snow except for
the Inter-Library Loan processes.
Library Collections
The Library is a multimedia facility with collections that include approximately
50,000 books, more than 250 print periodical and newspaper subscriptions,
thousands of microforms, audio and videocassettes, and internet periodical
and reference works. Through cooperative purchases with other college
and university libraries in the state, the Phillips Library provides access
to more than 15,000 full-text periodicals through the Internet. The Ruth
C. Olsen Special Collections Room houses materials related to Snow College,
local history, Utah history, and other items of special interest. The
Arlea and Demont Howell Children’s Literature Collection is a collection
of children’s books established by Arlea and Demont Howell to support
the children’s literature curriculum at Snow College. Most books,
audiovisual materials and maps may be checked out. Items which are only
for use in the library are magazines, newspapers, microforms, reference
books, audiovisual and electronic equipment, The Howell Children’s
Literature Collection and The Olsen Special Collections Room materials.
Loan Periods
All circulating collections are loaned to students and community patrons
for three weeks, except Reserve items, “Cliffs Notes” (located
on the index tables) and video cassettes. Reserve items may have loan
periods of two hours (in-house) or overnight (1day). “Cliffs Notes”
and Videocassettes have a one week loan period. Faculty, staff, and administrators
have loan periods of 15 weeks, except for videocassettes and DVDs which have a
normal one week loan period. The due date will be printed on a receipt and will accompany
all out-going material.
Fines and Other Charges
•After the three week loan period, a .25 fine per day will be charged.
Fines will accrue up to $3.00 per book, or up to $10.00 maximum per person
per checkout date.
•Remember to obtain and keep a receipt for any overdue fines
or fees paid. “Holds” may be placed on student registration
records if fines or fees are left unpaid. This may prohibit students from
registering or receiving transcripts. Library borrowing privileges will
be suspended for community patrons with fines. Patrons will be sent reminder
notices on overdue books. However, failure to receive any notices will
not be accepted as grounds to remove overdue fines.
•In the event that library materials are lost or damaged,
the borrower will be required to pay a replacement fee. If the item is
returned after the replacement fee has been paid, the amout will be refunded
--minus an overdue fine, if appropriate.
Checking-out & Returning Materials
•To check out materials from the library, a Snow College photo I.D.
card or any photo I.D. must be presented at the circulation desk. New
patron registration is also handled there.
•When returning material(s), please place them inside
the book return slots. One return drop is located at the circulation desk,
and the other is found outside the front entrance of the library.
•All materials are renewed for the same length of time as the original
loan period. There are unlimited renewal privileges. Renewals may be requested
by phone (283-7363), the library
catalog, or in person. If renewals are made over the phone, it is a
good idea to wait on the line until the process is complete.
•An item will not be renewed if another person has
placed a “hold” or “request” on the item.
Reserve Collection
The Reserve Collection is cataloged on an electronic database called “ERES”.
It is made up of materials required by instructors for particular course
work and a few special library reference materials. Articles or paper
documents are scanned in and can be electronically accessed through the
Electronic Reserve link on our web page (www.lib.snow.edu). Your instructor
should tell you the password for accessing their reserve readings. Hard
copy materials such as books, videos, CD-ROMS and audiocassettes are filed
behind the circulation desk and are available for two-hour in-house checkout.
Periodicals
The library subscribes to or otherwise receives approximately 250 different
periodicals. These include newspapers, magazines, indexes, abstracts in
paper and microform formats. Current paper issues and some back issues
are located on the 2nd floor on open shelving in alphabetical order by
title. Many older issues are stored on microform. Most current titles
and hundreds more are located on our UALC sponsored databases. They are
linked from our web page (www.lib.snow.edu) under “Databases and
Indexes”.
Interlibrary Loan and UTAD Services
If the library does not own a needed book or article, Snow College students
and employees may contact circulation personnel for assistance with interlibrary
loan and UTAD requests. There is generally no charge for materials requested.
The charge for photocopies requested through interlibrary loan is .10
per photocopy. Charges will be collected in advance for interlibrary loan
photocopies. UTAD articles are faxed to the library’s FAX machine
and the patron is then notified.
