A modern library is more than just a place to check out books. The Snow College Library is not large, but its progressive and energetic staff more than compensate by squeezing a wide array of services into the available space. What you find on the shelves is only a fraction of the knowledge and support the library has to offer, and taking some time to become familiar with its less traditional services will lend depth and convenience to teaching at Snow. The librarians and their assistants are very good at filling in for each other, but knowing who is particularly responsible for certain things makes using the Library more efficient.

Begin with depth. The Library has approximately 50,000 volumes and receives more than 250 periodicals a month. New books are acquired constantly, and suggestions or requests are always welcome. All full-time and part-time faculty may formally recommend specific books through their departments, or in person by giving their titles and ISBN numbers to a librarian. Lynn Anderson, who handles specific requests, is available by phone at 7366. Periodic open houses, held to display newly acquired books, are worth attending as an easy way to keep up with the evolving collection.

Less obvious than the books are the thousands of microfilm and microfiche holdings and audio and videocassettes. In addition, the Ruth C. Olsen Special Collections Room holds items of special interest, including material on Snow College, local history, and Utah history. The Arlea and Demont Howell Children’s Literature Collection supports the College’s children’s literature curriculum.

Interlibrary loan enables scholars and writers to live in small towns across America and yet work as effectively as those living in large cities. Books and journal articles not actually here can be borrowed from another library, or in some cases photocopied or faxed to us. The delivery of whole books can take up to two weeks, so don’t hesitate to make requests early.

Adjunct faculty have access to the Internet through office or personal computers and the Snow College computer network, but the Library subscribes to academic databases and over twenty-five thousand full-text periodicals that can be searched by anyone using the Library’s databases. Librarians are available to demonstrate how these work. Jon Ostler works individually with faculty who want to understand the system better or who are working on personal projects. An appointment can be made with him in person or by phone to demonstrate to an entire class how to use the system for research. When you bring your class to the Library the demonstration can be customized to the specific topics you are teaching. Jon’s phone number is 7362.

If used fully, Library services make teaching easier as well. Four copy machines, including color, two microfilm and microfiche printers, and a scanner increase the usefulness of library materials. Rare or unique materials can be placed on reserve behind the checkout desk. Cataloged on ERes, an electronic database that tracks the entire Reserve Collection, they are available to students for in-library use without interrupting the professor. Scanned materials put on the Library’s website are available through the Electronic Reserve link, where access is protected by a password given out to students in a particular class.

The third floor of the Lucy A. Phillips library also houses the Snow College’s Ednet facility. This is where classes are recorded for broadcast over the closed-circuit television system. Next door is the Technology Center, where the computer network’s servers are housed and the IT staff have their offices.

Faculty use of the Library is restricted to the posted hours, but you may check materials out for two months, except for videocassettes and DVDs, which are due in one week. A photo I.D. is required to take materials, and the due date will appear on the receipt that is printed out as part of the check out process.
